Getting Started
The CD-ROM is optimized to run under Windows
95/98/NT/2000/2003/XP using Adobe Acrobat Reader. If you do not have Adobe
Acrobat Reader already installed on your computer, go to http://www.adobe.com and you will
be directed to download the correct version for your OS. If you do not have
access to the Internet, Acrobat reader installers are located in the Install
directory on the CD. To install the tools on your computer, insert the CD into
your CD disc drive. In most cases, a setup program will start automatically. (It
may take a few moments for the opening windows to appear on your screen. If the
indicator light is flashing on your CD drive, the program is still loading.)
You may also run the CD in Unix or on the Mac. Please see more
detailed instructions below. Your right to use the product is governed by the
terms and conditions of the End User License Agreement.
Note |
Some of the tools available for download from the CD fall
under the GNU General Public License. For your convenience, we have included the
GNU General Public License on the CD-ROM as well as in the back of the book.
Please review it carefully.

Windows 95/98/NT/2000/2003/XP
The CD will start automatically when you insert the CD in
the drive. If the program does not start automatically, your system may not be
set up to automatically detect CDs. You can start the program as follows:
double-click the My Computer icon on the Windows Desktop. When the My Computer
window opens, double-click the icon for your CD drive. The program should start.
If it doesn't, you should now see a list of the contents of the CD. Look for the
file named start or start.exe.
Double-click this file to start the program.
If you do not have the latest version of Adobe Reader on your
desktop, you may receive an error message that reads, "There was an error
opening this document. The device is not ready." If you get this message, press
the Okay button. You may receive another message that states, "Adobe PDF
documents on the Web can be viewed inside Netscape and Internet Explorer.
However, this feature is currently disabled, and PDF documents on the Web will
open in a separate Window. Would you like to enable this feature so you can view
PDF documents in Netscape or Internet Explorer?" Click the Yes button and you
should be directed to the main page.
If you prefer, you can run
the contents of the CD from your hard drive without having to use the CD. To do
so, right-click the CD drive, select Open, and copy the book folder to your hard
drive. Once this is done, you can start the program by opening the book folder
and double-clicking the file named cover or cover.pdf. This will automatically start the associated
Acrobat Reader application provided it has been installed on the system. For
convenience, you can create a shortcut to the cover file and place it on your
Desktop. You will then be able to start the program by clicking on the
shortcut.
Windows 3.1
For Windows 3.1 users, you must use Acrobat Reader version
3.0. You can run the program from your CD or you can install it on your hard
drive. To install it, copy the book folder to your hard drive and then install
Acrobat Reader 3.0 for Windows. Then, to run the program, open the book folder
and double-click the cover.pdf file.
Macintosh
You must be running in Mac OS version 7.1.2 or higher. Start
the program by double-clicking the Start icon. If you prefer, you can run the
program from your hard drive without having to use the CD. To do so, copy the
files to your hard drive and install Acrobat Reader. (Note: You must do this if
you are using a 68K Macintosh.) Users of OS X versions 10.2.2 through 10.2.7
will have to manually open the Tools directory to access the individual
applications.
Unix
Go to http://www.adobe.com to locate Adobe Acrobat Reader for
Linux/Unix platforms. To install the program, copy the contents of the CD to
your hard drive. Then install the appropriate version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.
You may then search the tools from your hard drive by clicking the PDF name or
browsing the Tools directory.
Tools on the CD
When you go to the PDF with the list of Tools on the CD, you
can download each tool by clicking the Tool name; this will take you directly to
the Tool directory on the CD so you can save the tool on your computer. For your
convenience, we have also included the links to each of the web sites where you
can find updates and new versions that may be available for each tool. Please
note that these are the latest links as of the publication of the
book.
Links to Additional Tools
We have provided links to the additional tools discussed in
the book that are not available for download on the CD. The list of tools on the
CD and the list of additional tools together comprise all of the tools discussed
in the book.
Problems with the CD
If you have followed the
instructions above and the program will not work, you may have a defective drive
or a defective CD. Be sure the CD is inserted properly in the drive. (Test the
drive with other CDs to see if they run.) If you live in the U.S. and the CD
included in your book has defects in materials or workmanship, please call
McGraw-Hill at 1-800-217-0059, 9AM to 5PM, Monday through Friday, Eastern
Standard Time, and McGraw-Hill will replace the defective disc. If you live
outside the U.S., send an e-mail to omg_international@mcgraw-hill.com
